Anyone living in the Southern Hemisphere (or even in the southern parts of the Northern Hemisphere) can look into the constellation Centaurus and see the globular cluster Omega Centauri. Although this cluster has a diameter of only 170 light years, it contains over a million stars. Our Sun is 4.3 light years from its nearest neighbor star; the stars in Omega Centauri are only one tenth of a light year apart. Imagine the view of the night sky from the center of this cluster.
Globular clusters present a diffi- cult problem in stellar dynamics, since the gravity of each star in a cluster affects the motion of the others. Even the largest of todayΓÇÖs supercomputers cannot model the interactions in a globular cluster
